Was it Shatner that said "get a life"?

Note: Posted publically since I mentioned this post in the theo_waitley community.

I love the Liaden books. Whenever people ask what they should be reading that's what I recommend. I've read all the Fledgling chapters so far and I'm in the process of reading the Liaden Universe Companion, Volume 1 for the 2nd time (the first time was at least a year ago while visiting D in Boston).

Still...REALLY PEOPLE....the current conversation in theo_waitley is driving me nuts.

According to the L.U.C. Vol 1 the first Liaden chapbook was published in 1995. We're currently in 2007. As far as I can tell Agent of Change was originally published in 1988. That means some of these stories are 20 years old.

Figuring out the dates the current story takes place logically based on statements in the past books is silly. Even more so because we don't know what age Theo is when she appears at the end of I Dare.

It is not really realistic to believe that Lee and Miller have had all these stories plotted out since the beginning.

Get a life...
Yes, it was Shatner who said that in his "I am Canadian" monologue. Actually I think it was "And when you say 'Live long and prosper' I seriously mean it when I say 'get a life' "

Re: Get a life...
ok, I have a dorky question.....is Jenn Sarr ( and we know that is not his real name) also Val Con's father? I could see how this could lead Theo to have some interesting issues with her matrilinear culture and when the secrets of her DNA are revealed....well.....Luuuuuuuucy...you gooooot sommmmmme 'splain' to doooooooooooo.

There is a clan out there that will want a baaaaaaaby.

This is the weekend we planned on going to the museum and all.....I am going to see Black Sabbath on Friday.......

Yes, we find out in Plan B/I Dare, and even more directly in the chapbook story "Breath's Duty" (In LUC1) that Professor of Cultural Genetics Jen Sar Kiladi and Daav yos'Phelium (Val Con's father) are one and the same.

Re: Get a life...
Actually, he first said it in a famous Saturday Night Live skit in 1987.

Yes, I couldn't remember where the first reference came from. The one I was talking about is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1CwZgb_iAI
and its a reference to that skit, I believe.

do you mean . . .
it's not real? Ah, the heartbreak, the disillusionment! I shall have to drown my sorrows in Dr. Pepper and a Snickers :-)

I'm amazed at how well it all holds up. And if there happens to be a slip of the decade here and there, well, it's just us friends, right? And this is a draft, meaning that revision is certainly possible.

Heck, given that they are doing interplanetary travel, they could even sneak in a wiggle factor due to time dilation during a long jump - and what the heck, I'd be happy to read it.

It's fiction. Granted, keeping the story spinning means avoiding major bumps and bobbles, but the minutia aren't really the point, are they?

Although there does seem to be some difference of opine about just how strictly and firmly assumptions must be held. Me, I like to leave some looseness in mine, it lets me enjoy the story even if the engine shakes a mite.

Thanks!

Re: do you mean . . .
I agree. I'm impressed that they've done as well as they have at the continuity.

My thing is that I'm all for reading the books as written without trying to second guess the authors based on things they've written in the past.

Intro
Greetings! I'm writing to introduce myself, now that I've added you to my Friends list. I found you through my ljmindmap, which showed you as the person who was a friend of the largest number of my friends (if that makes any sense), namely, "(by meapet lionessindc grail76 fatesfolly kellfire free_of_whip alricthemad)". I stopped by to see your public posts and hit this one. As an avid Liaden universe fan, I knew I had to read more. I don't know much about Pennsic, but expect there's more than that in your private posts. hmmm, I need to go back and read just my public posts to see what picture that presents. Well, if you're friends with all of the above mentioned people, then my weirder private side probably won't shock you too much.
Looking forward to getting to know you better,

Re: Intro
Hi. I've friended you back so you can see more posts, although I didn't put you on the SCA filter so I don't think you'll see much on Pennsic. If you're interested I'll be happy to add you but that is by far my highest traffic filter. :)

The people we have in common are pretty cool aren't they? ;)
