Cake on display

Cake on display, originally uploaded by OrlaCarey.

So here it is. Click here and you'll see more pictures of the helm then anyone could possibly want to. But do it anyway - the pictures are worth seeing. It was based on a helm that Frederich found on the internet and I think it's passed the Pennsic cake as my favorite cake we've done.

Several people last night said "Hey have you seen the helm on the commercial for Ace of Cakes?" To which I talk about the fact that we paused Tivo and frederich commented on problems with the helm (i.e. it should be longer here and more bowed there etc). Of course we had the advantage of a professional armorer to tell us the order that the pieces should be put on and where the rivets were supposed to go etc.

Thanks for the report! I was actually afraid that it came out too dry in the end since the test cake had a simple syrup on it and I didn't do that for the cake in the end. None of us tasted it so I'm glad to hear from someone who did.

Nope - somehow we never managed to do that. Heck we're actually lucky to have good pictures of the cake at all. When we did Roxie's Laurel cake we got nothin.

The cake is incredible! Sorry I missed watching it being made. Wish we could have been there to see it in person! Please let me know the next time you are baking or lace making I’d love to come.

Thanks

Orla thanks again for doing this cake for us. It was wonderful and the helm also tasted really good. The only bad side is that I had purple/silver lips for the rest of the day. :)

Plus I love the picture that was taken of Henry!!!

Holy COW!!!!

That's fantastic!!!

I have some technical questions for you, but man, that's an incredible cake!!!! I'm drooling, over here! LOL

And I'll bet there were silver tongues and lips all over the place. :)

1) did you use fondant for the helm?
2) how'd you make it silver? Luster Dust? the wilton silver dust? How? How? HOW???? :) I haven't tried any metallics yet... I'm a-feared... :P

This looks fantastic. You've outdone yourself!
