Lessons learned on the walk
1) No really drink more water - Two days after the event and I'm STILL thirsty - I did NOT drink enough during the walk
2) NEVER leave a pit stop or grab n go with less than two full bottles of beverage - you never know what the terrain is going to be like and if you'll need it
3) Practice on hills and pathways - not just sidewalks and mall walking (or treadmills). Saturday a lot of the walking was on the edges of roads walking on asphalt and we faced some fairly major hills each day.
4) The SMART people brought knit hats and gloves so that they had them available on Saturday night when it was freezing - what I wouldn't have given for a ski cap
5) Bring knee braces - the ace bandages that the medical stations had weren't long enough to deal with knees well and really ace bandages don't do a good job for knees anyway
6) Take pictures everywhere - and put an extra set of batteries in your fanny pack even for opening ceremonies
7) When doing training walks make sure you practice with your water bottles full and carrying everything you think you're going to carry on the walk - my fanny pack weighed a lot more than I expected it to with full bottles
8) Don't forget to bring scissors capable of cutting moleskin
9) Reconsider the fanny pack - I liked mine up until this event but the catch kept releasing at inconvient times. Maybe a backpack would be better?
I'm sure I'll add to this list as I think of things

| VoicePost 408K 2:06 | “Well I'm sitting here at Pitt stop number 2 waiting for the sweep bus to pick me up and take me to lunch. Um Tirzah is on the course ah Pitt stop number two is 5.1 miles in. Ah we were starting out okay walking up and down the hills blah blah blah. And um all the sudden the caboose came up to us and said "Hey if you're going be...If you miss this pitt stop they're going to stick you on the bus to go to lunch" So we got on the sweep bus and went to pitt stop number one. And rather than taking the time to sit down do whatever rest for a few minutes we decided to keep going just refilled our water bottles ect. And thought we were doing really well got to pitt stop number 2 just as it was closing. And Tirzah was able to keep going and I could not walk any further without some sort of a break which included taking tylonal and wrapping my knees after putting some tiger balm on them. Yes in fact my knees are the thing that hurt the worst that is not generally a good sign. Anyway So Tirzah is still on the course and I will be meeting her at lunch. I'll try to walk some more after lunch. I'm not sure how much longer my battery is going to work. I really should not have listened when people when they said that there would there was no charging station because I could have brought my charger. But we'll see what happens. I may be posting from Tirzah's phone in the future. Umm I guess that's about it will talk to you later. Bye” Transcribed by: |

I was actually doing pretty good until they walked us down to Water St. and then walked us back up from Water St. This is all pretty much one big hill, and I was out of water before we got to Water St. They really need a pit stop there. I'm pretty much doing my thing. I sent Tierza on ahead. If I get to the point I think I can keep on going, I will; if I find a street van, I'll take that to lunch. Talk to you later. Bye.” Transcribed by: multiple users |
| VoicePost 157K 0:47 | “We're at pitt stop 3 the corner of O and 26th NW. This is mile 8. Um the pitt stop signs that say "you got a mile to go" "you got this much to go before lunch ect" lie like a rug and our bodies have figured out that we're not on a shopping trip and are really unhappy with us. Um but other than that we're doing pretty good. Ah we're stopping for a little while to have chips and peanuts and do that lovely stuff and try to get my hands to stop swellings quite as much as they are but we're doing really good. Um we'll try to post again later. Bye” Transcribed by: |

As I mentioned last night LLT and I are now checked in through the online system. We're sharing a tent (go figure).
At this point LLT is still about $150 short of the minimum for her to walk. Here is her donation link.
Thanks to everyone who has already donated I have made my minimum, but not my goal. Here is my donation link.
If you would like to donate but don't want to do it online you can find a printable donation form on the bottom of each page.
Remember, we're still planning on giving a bobbin lace hankie to one lucky person who donate $25 to either of us. At this point it looks like the hankie won't be done before the walk but I will do my best to get it to you as soon after as is possible.
Meep! I just looked and there are only 51 days to the event!

As most of you know, over the last several years I have made several bobbin lace handkerchiefs for the Atlantian Lace Guild, with LLT assisting on the most of them. Up until now the ONLY way to get a lace hankie made by me was to become Queen and then hope that I was the one who did that reign's hankie.
In an effort to raise money for the 3 Day Walk Tirzah and I will be raffling off a lace hankie, with the lace made by me and with blackwork/construction by Tirzah.
The rules
1) Donation must be to either My fundraising page or Tirzah's fundraising page. If you want to mail in a donation and have it count the donation must be received by the site and acknowledged on one of our pages by the raffle deadline - Saturday, September 27 (the Saturday before the walk).
2) Donations can be made to either account
3) For each $25 donated you will get one entry in the raffle. While you don't have to donate all funds at once, $25 increments cannot cross the accounts. This means if you donate $25 to each of us you get 2 tickets. If you donate $50 to one of us you get 2 tickets. If you donate $10 to one of us and $15 to the other you don't get a ticket. Sorry, but I need to do this to make life easier for me.
4) If you have already donated $25 or more you already have entries - thanks for the donation!
5) On Saturday, September 27 I will tally all donations and hold the raffle. Tirzah will draw the winning name out of the bag and I will announce the winner here.
Rules may be added as I think of them, but the basic rules should stay the same.

Here is my fundraising page for the 3 day walk!
Wish me luck you guys. Somehow it's a little on the scary side realizing that I've now commited myself to not only walking 60 miles in 3 days but raising $2,300. But it's important, and I'm strangely looking forward to it.
Expect to hear more about this during the next few months, but I've set up a blog on my personal page so that I can keep track of my training there.
Next step is a "Getting Started" meeting next Wednesday (1/21) at 7 pm at Holy Cross Hospital.

Thanks to
I'm happy to support her (which I will be doing as soon as my next paycheck hits) because I'm proud of her for doing this as well as for acheiving her weight goals.
Please consider supporting her as well. I know it seems like I'm reguarly posting asking for support for one person or another doing a breast cancer fundraiser - and next year I'm planning on asking you to support me. But we've all had so many people effected by this horrible disease. Please, if you have the ability, click the link and donate a little.
Tomorrow
museclio and
webqatch will be working in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. This is Museclio's walk page. Please, if you have some extra change in your pockets, consider donating it to this worthy cause. Currently
museclio is at 72% of her funding goal (
webqatch has met his funding goal).
I hate this disease. I hate what it does to family and friends, let alone what it does to the people who have it.

Avon Walk - support for
museclio
Every year I pimp someone in my journal who is walking in the Avon Walk. For the 2nd year in a row that person is
museclio. The link to her personal donation page is here. If you have some extra money, please donate to the cause.
For those of you who don't know my personal history with Breast Cancer, my Grandmother died of it when I was around 13. Within the last couple of years I've lost two friends to it and another is currently fighting

My friend is looking for an event space for it's Privateer Feast. This feast raises money to help support the walkers of Team Wench in their fundraising for the Walk for Breast Cancer.
I figure enough of my friends are involved in SCA eventing that maybe you'll have ideas for them.

I have two friends (that I know of) walking in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer on April 29-30.
museclio only needs $65 $240 to make her goal of $2,750 $3,000 (donation link here).
webqatch is also walking, but he has a slightly higher goal. ( Here is a note from him altered slightly to reflect current numbers: )
What is the raffle about you ask? If he makes his goal of $10K he's going to have a raffle for everyone who donates $50 (extra tickets in increments of $50). Whoever wins the raffle gets to decide how long his hair should be.
Personally I'm rooting for someone who likes his hair the way it is, but then I don't get to see him enough for it to make a difference. If you have some extra money in the next couple of days, please support someone who is willing to put not only a couple of days of walking, but his hair on the line in the name of Breast Cancer Research.
Edit: Numbers updated as of 6 pm.

Once again one of my friends is doing the Avon Breast Cancer Walk at the end of April. If you have some extra cash please support her walk.
I don't have money right this instant but as soon as I can shake some free I'll be pledging.

I looked at the calendar today and realized that The Race for the Cure is a week from Saturday.
My Grandmother died of breast cancer.
Within the last six months I had two friends die from cancer.
Within the last month I found out someone else has been diagnosed.
I am sure there are more people in my life that I don't even know about who are dealing with this.
I have a friend who is planning on racing. Please support her in her efforts.

Therapies Shown to Cure Breast Cancer
The latest data from an extensive ongoing project involving 145,000 women with early breast cancer found that chemotherapy and hormone treatment continue to protect many women from dying from the disease for at least 15 years. The protection often gets stronger over time, increasing the likelihood that the therapy is truly eradicating cancer from their bodies.
The findings provide the most convincing support yet for using aggressive strategies against the most common malignancy to strike women, and they help explain why the death rate from breast cancer has been dropping in many countries, including the United States and Britain, experts said.
edited to say: For you guys not in the loop, I'm posting this because someone I know and care about just got bad news. While I try to be aware of breast cancer issues because of family history, I was given a clean bill of health on this issue in January.
