Lessons Learned

Lessons learned on the walk

1) No really drink more water - Two days after the event and I'm STILL thirsty - I did NOT drink enough during the walk

2) NEVER leave a pit stop or grab n go with less than two full bottles of beverage - you never know what the terrain is going to be like and if you'll need it

3) Practice on hills and pathways - not just sidewalks and mall walking (or treadmills). Saturday a lot of the walking was on the edges of roads walking on asphalt and we faced some fairly major hills each day.

4) The SMART people brought knit hats and gloves so that they had them available on Saturday night when it was freezing - what I wouldn't have given for a ski cap

5) Bring knee braces - the ace bandages that the medical stations had weren't long enough to deal with knees well and really ace bandages don't do a good job for knees anyway

6) Take pictures everywhere - and put an extra set of batteries in your fanny pack even for opening ceremonies

7) When doing training walks make sure you practice with your water bottles full and carrying everything you think you're going to carry on the walk - my fanny pack weighed a lot more than I expected it to with full bottles

8) Don't forget to bring scissors capable of cutting moleskin

9) Reconsider the fanny pack - I liked mine up until this event but the catch kept releasing at inconvient times. Maybe a backpack would be better?

I'm sure I'll add to this list as I think of things

“So LLT is back in Camp. It's a bad sprain. She's got crutches. She is red-carded. She is not allowed to walk.

In fact, she'll be spending the night in the medical tent because it'll be much easier to get her to lay down on one of those cots than it would be to squeeze her into The Tent which is barely big enough for the two of us as it is. In fact, she says that she needs help getting in and out of porta-castles. Joy.

But she says she's doing pretty good other than that.

Needless to say, she'll be spending the day tomorrow in Camp, doing whatever they do with Walkers who can't walk.

In the meantime, it's getting a little chilly, in fact it's getting enough chilly that I have two pairs of pants on and two shirts. So tonight should be interesting, especially for all those people who seemed to think all they needed to bring was two pairs of shorts.

Trying to think of what else I should say, but nothing is coming to mind. I'll close this now. I'm not sure I'll make any voice posts tomorrow since my cell phone is pretty much out of battery is mostly dead and Tirza's probably going to have hers.

But I am writing stuff down, so I'll be posting something to LJ after things get, you know, done and I get home tomorrow. But I did want you guys all know that she is okay. She's supposed to be on crutches for five days. That means that next weekend IS going to be really really entertaining.

Laura, don't worry, we'll get everything fine. We'll just deal. She'll just have to do a certain amount of it sitting from a chair.

Talk to you guys later. Bye.”

“What a genius I am. I was able to catch a Sweep Bus to get to the third pit stop where I got someone to wrap my knee. Then I was able to walk the rest of the way to lunch.

Tirza made it to the Grab 'n' Go before she lost... before she ended up grabbing a Sweep Van and she hobbled to the medical place at lunch where they sent her to the Emergency Room because they think she has a broken ankle. Ummm... yeah... I told her she wasn't allowed to have a broken ankle because otherwise I'd kill her. (?not sure who?), you *are* coming next week, right?

My battery is about out of juice, so I'm not going to be posting much until I get ahold of Tirza's phone. I'm keeping everything open until she calls me.

Talk to you guys later, bye!”

“Well I'm sitting here at Pitt stop number 2 waiting for the sweep bus to pick me up and take me to lunch. Um Tirzah is on the course ah Pitt stop number two is 5.1 miles in. Ah we were starting out okay walking up and down the hills blah blah blah. And um all the sudden the caboose came up to us and said "Hey if you're going be...If you miss this pitt stop they're going to stick you on the bus to go to lunch" So we got on the sweep bus and went to pitt stop number one. And rather than taking the time to sit down do whatever rest for a few minutes we decided to keep going just refilled our water bottles ect. And thought we were doing really well got to pitt stop number 2 just as it was closing. And Tirzah was able to keep going and I could not walk any further without some sort of a break which included taking tylonal and wrapping my knees after putting some tiger balm on them. Yes in fact my knees are the thing that hurt the worst that is not generally a good sign. Anyway So Tirzah is still on the course and I will be meeting her at lunch. I'll try to walk some more after lunch. I'm not sure how much longer my battery is going to work. I really should not have listened when people when they said that there would there was no charging station because I could have brought my charger. But we'll see what happens. I may be posting from Tirzah's phone in the future. Umm I guess that's about it will talk to you later. Bye”

“So I made it 10.2 miles. Tirzah made it all the way to lunch - 12.5 miles. At that point we decided that if we wanted to walk tomorrow, we were done for today.

So we sat and watched "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" in the Bus while we were waiting for it to go back to camp. We are now at camp, looking at the most pathatic land pimple I've ever seen in my life. Well actually a sea of them. But ours is set up.
We have our bed, and everything else. We've managed to squeeze everything into this tiny little land pimple.

And now I'm probably going to end up rubbing a hideous amount of tiger balm into Tirzah ankles because they Suck... and Tirzah's calves as well.

BTW, leave a message for Rivka and Sas - "YOU GUYS SUCK" [lots of snickering in the background]. Thank you for talking us into doing this, it's uh.. an "Experience". Bye!”

“Well, I made it to the corner of 33rd and Q, N.W. I was actually doing pretty good until they walked us down to Water St. and then walked us back up from Water St. This is all pretty much one big hill, and I was out of water before we got to Water St. They really need a pit stop there. I'm pretty much doing my thing. I sent Tierza on ahead. If I get to the point I think I can keep on going, I will; if I find a street van, I'll take that to lunch. Talk to you later. Bye.”

“We're at pitt stop 3 the corner of O and 26th NW. This is mile 8. Um the pitt stop signs that say "you got a mile to go" "you got this much to go before lunch ect" lie like a rug and our bodies have figured out that we're not on a shopping trip and are really unhappy with us. Um but other than that we're doing pretty good. Ah we're stopping for a little while to have chips and peanuts and do that lovely stuff and try to get my hands to stop swellings quite as much as they are but we're doing really good. Um we'll try to post again later. Bye”

“So here we are at the first Official pit stop, not the Starbucks, although there is a restraunt full of food. We are at the Canadian Embassy, there are lots of people here.

I stopped to check my feet because I thought I was starting to get a blister, but what I found was a loose string in my sock. So hopefully I will have stopped the problem before it actually started.

Other than that we are doing pretty good. We are not at the end of the pack, I'd say we are about the beginning of middle of the pack. I don't know where we will be at the end of the pit stop because Tirzah is of in the restroom line and I'm just waiting for her. Bye.”

“So we are just leaving the unofficial first pit stop of the walk which would be the Starbucks right next to the Hyatt in North West DC, you guys know the one-- we go there ever so often on Tuesday night.

So, Anyway, I don't think they warned the Starbucky's that a large crowd of people coming, but anyway. Managed to have my battery die before I took my first picture.

They have taken us on a very convoluted route which has taken us close to Union Station, but not so much close enough for use to walk into it. Other than that we are doing pretty good. Tirzah is carrying the patients banner for the moment. Hope you guys are doing pretty good. Bye!”

As I mentioned last night LLT and I are now checked in through the online system. We're sharing a tent (go figure).

At this point LLT is still about $150 short of the minimum for her to walk. Here is her donation link.

Thanks to everyone who has already donated I have made my minimum, but not my goal. Here is my donation link.

If you would like to donate but don't want to do it online you can find a printable donation form on the bottom of each page.

Remember, we're still planning on giving a bobbin lace hankie to one lucky person who donate $25 to either of us. At this point it looks like the hankie won't be done before the walk but I will do my best to get it to you as soon after as is possible.

Meep! I just looked and there are only 51 days to the event!

I'm Registered for the 3-Day!!!

fundraising
Here is my fundraising page for the 3 day walk!

Wish me luck you guys. Somehow it's a little on the scary side realizing that I've now commited myself to not only walking 60 miles in 3 days but raising $2,300. But it's important, and I'm strangely looking forward to it.

Expect to hear more about this during the next few months, but I've set up a blog on my personal page so that I can keep track of my training there.

Next step is a "Getting Started" meeting next Wednesday (1/21) at 7 pm at Holy Cross Hospital.
