What greeted me on the way in this morning.

This apartment building is across the street from my office. In order to get into the parking lot you have to go through the area that was blocked off. Fortuantely I come in late enough that everything was unblocked by the time I got to work.

Two people died this morning in an eleventh-floor fire in a Silver Spring high rise apartment building, according to the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer.

The fire, at the 16-story Blair East Apartments at 1220 East-West Highway, also required evacuation of the building.

A number of residents were treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire was reported at 5:20 a.m. by a passerby. More than 100 firefighters responded to the three-alarm blaze, Piringer said.

The names of the two people who died have not been released. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Alex Sanchez, disaster coordinator for the Red Cross in Montgomery County, said that about 100 residents had been given temporary shelter and assistance by the Red Cross but that all but three were able to return to their apartments by late morning.
