Question for Dog Owners

The dog I'm sitting is used to getting people food as part of her diet. I do not feed animals human food. This is the way I was raised and I am determined that I will not change my ways. Her owner said she would leave out dog treats when she found out that I am a hard nose about this, but forgot. I want to get her some treats for the week I'm there, but am not sure what to get. I haven't had a dog in about 20 years, and as I say we didn't ever feed our dogs human food. What's the best treat that I can get that she'll probably like?

Ideally I'd like something that I can give her in her bowl when I'm eating or when I've just finished dinner. Last night I couldn't figure anything out and I basically didn't see her for the rest of the night.

Yes I know I have that recipe somewhere that I was going to make for the hounds, but I haven't gotten around to it yet and I'm not likely to tonight. Plus I'm on a limited budget so I'm figuring one box of dog treats will be less than buying the assorted ingredients (flour, egg, honey, peanut butter, shortening, baking soda, rolled oats, vanilla)

Suggestions?

BTW, no, that's not the dog either - that's PC's Pugsley. But I don't have a pic of the current dog to share.

Most dogs are crazy about pig ears. They can chew on them for hours.

You can pick up from any pet store.

Yes but aren't they kinda messy? The family has a 4 year old so I don't want to give her anything that could leave a mess all over the place. I wish I knew what kind of treats they normally give her, but I can't tell.

Thanks. My Aunt and Uncle used to give their dog ice cubes until he started playing with them instead of eating them. So I'm used to that.

treats
A few random thoughts:

Bil-Jac makes some liver treats that my dogs adore. They are pretty small, and not messy. They aren't very expensive, either. They don't last, though - they get scarfed up immediately, so they're not something you can give them to chew on for a while.

If you want something good for the dogs to chew on for a while, "Greenies" are great. They are good for them (and their teeth), and help with doggie breath. They aren't cheap, but I think they're worth it.

Both can be found at your local Petsmart.

Then there's the standard rawhide bone, of course (Bailey loves those).

Carrots and apples are wonderful, but some dogs don't like them. Other dogs will eat anything that's not tied down (including things that are toxic to dogs, like chocolate, raisins, or onions).

Occasionally I'll feel human food as a treat (liver, chicken, bits of steak), but not as a regular thing, and not as their main diet. I've been told, that cottage cheese makes a good additive to kibble.... Speaking of kibble, Wellness makes a really good dog food. While it's expensive, it doesn't have some of the junk that some commercial foods do (corn, preservatives, etc). If you go for a commercial ('buy in the grocery store') food, Beneful is pretty good - it's what I've used in the past.

Re: treats
Thanks. I actually ended up not doing anything because I decided making sure I had gas money for the week trumped dog treats. However I'm sure that this topic will come up again in the future so I'm keeping all of this stuff in mind.

Sorry!! I forgot a few things like that. But she certainly seemed to be a happy dog when we got home :)

Thank you so much!!
(Ps. I had left her a BIG knuckle bone outside to knaw on, so she wasn't deprived...)

Not a problem at all. She was a sweetheart!

I noticed at one point she had a bone, and I do confess that one night I undercooked my hamburger so she ended up getting some of it. She didn't do too badly. :)

Hope you had a good trip!
